Haiku

Written yesterday for word of the day, lackadaisical, at Poem of the Day:

Sunday newspaper,
Slow coffee, the vase empty,
Lackadaisical

I think the haiku form is so effective, and this is really visual. "The vase empty" speaks volumes to me, but I can't explain why!

I agree with Mary. That empty vase really strikes me in a visceral way that defies facile explanation.

I reach for the visual a lot because it is so concrete and understandable. The trick is to find those visuals that, together, compose a picture that says (directly or indirectly) more than the individual parts. Of course, I don't think of it that abstractly normally! Thank you for helping me articulate what I'm doing! And thank you for your kind words, both of you.
