Night tree

from a patch of striped night
in the arms of a shadowy tree
two sudden stars shone bright
peering down at me

in a gesture of charm and guile
he sharply cocked his ears
offered a Cheshire smile
and quickly disappeared

They are cute, aren't they? I just wish the coyotes did a better job of keeping their numbers down.

I can tell what "Dave" that is without clicking!

Surprised you managed to nab that much of him... Ours dash along the pointy fence top at a very high rate of speed.

I like that Cheshire feeling--very apt. LC must be one of the most influential writers ever, judging by how often bits of him materialize (Cheshire-like) in our minds. All but the logic passes through mine!

we have sooooo many! recently we saw mama and her 4 young ones...all in a row! there must be at least 8 which roam our neighborhood. unfortunately, they sometimes mistake our garden as a public toilet; one spot is their favorite. it is quite aggravating, but their cute faces still win us over.

congrats on your poem publication!

Off to rob another trash can of its prize, or go looking for the Queen of Hearts.

and did he leave his cheshire grin suspended just above the tree, charming and beguiling thee
in the night time air so thin?
